SQCC hosts Peace Thru Culture Summer Camp
Monday, July 31, 2017
Students from Peace Thru Culture Summer Camp visited SQCC on 31 July. The group first toured the permanent exhibition space and learned about Omani history, Omani irrigation practices (the aflaj system), traditional handicrafts and dress. Students experienced Omani culture first hand as they learned about frankincense and painted their own traditional Omani majmar, or frankincense burner. After completing their majmars, the students explored the new seafaring exhibition, From Sinbad to the Shabab Oman: A Seafaring Legacy.
The group learned about Oman’s robust maritime past in the Indian Ocean. The children split into small groups to learn about each unique Omani port at the five interactive iPad display stands. After visiting each display, the campers regrouped and discussed their new knowledge about Oman’s Maritime history. Students concluded their day by learning how traditional sailors used a kamal to navigate the seas in the days before the magnetic compass or sextant.
