SQCC hosts MEOC@MESA Teacher Workshop

Saturday, November 18, 2017

On Saturday 18 November, SQCC and the Middle East Outreach Council (MEOC) co-sponsored a teacher workshop along with the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University, the Institute for Middle East Studies at George Washington University, and the Middle East Policy Council. The workshop was titled "Engage Your Five Senses! Cultural Exchanges from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean."

For each of the five senses, guest speakers presented different approaches to teaching about the Middle East and cultural exchange through a variety of interactive lesson plans and lectures. During the lunchtime portion of the workshop, participating educators were encouraged to explore their food in order to learn about ingredients therein, such as sumac, zaatar, rose water, and Omani limes. To learn more about the senses of hearing and touch, participants listened to the Layaali Arabic Music Ensemble deliver a participatory lecture on Arabic rhythms and music, as well as a concert. The workshop concluded at the newly re-opened Freer Sackler Museum, where participants toured the museum's collection of Arts of the Islamic World and learned about sight and touch.
