About the Event

On Wednesday 11 October and Monday 16 October, SQCC hosted students from Episcopal High School. During their visit, the students explored the SQCC library in which they were exposed to Omani literature as well as cultural imagery. Students had a tour at SQCC’s permanent exhibition, where the group were introduced to Oman, its traditions, culture, and history including: traditional Omani attire and handicrafts, pottery, basketry, and silver artwork. Students also learned about the historical importance of the aflaj irrigation system, forts, and maritime trade.

The visit then focused on Johka Al-Harthi’s book Celestial Bodies, which explores the progression of Omani society throughout the 20th century. This piece of literature provided a sufficient foundation for students to learn more about Omani society as it brought up questions about Cultural norms, traditions, Oman’s modernization, as well as the Omani renaissance.

Celestial Bodies acted as a gateway for students to understand Omani culture and provided SQCC staff with an opportunity to share information about Omani culture.
