The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center is partnering with the University of Houston-Clear Lake on 23 October for a conference addressing the critical intersection of global energy demand and responsible environmental stewardship in energy exporting regions. Free and open to the public, SQCC welcomes all to attend the conference and to join the important topics and conversation this conference addresses.

Oil in Oman and Texas: Overlapping Histories and Concerns| 9:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
  • Discussion of oil production and social change, current and future technologies, and future directions
  • Post-petroleum futures and common environmental concerns in the Arabian and American Gulfs
  • Evolution of smart cities post-oil and gas development
Environmental and Climate Challenges in Coastal Regions and Cities | 10:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Experiences of extreme weather, hurricanes (Houston), cyclones (Oman), and systemic preparedness
  • Climate effects on coastal systems, emergency preparedness and prevention; effects on habitats
  • Planning for climate challenges in multiple sectors (agriculture, housing, displacement)
  • Biodiversity, species preservation, and the shift from hurricane preparation to the future of smart cities
Disaster Management: Preparedness, Response, Humanitarian Aid | 1:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.
  • Regional management and shared knowledge of preparedness, response, and humanitarian aid

  • Discussion on emergency management approaches in Texas and Oman
