Al-Samawʾal Ibn ʿĀdiyāʾ was a Jewish-Arab poet of the sixth century CE, who lived in northwestern Arabia. He is widely remembered for the celebrated lāmiyya (an ode rhyming in lām) attributed to him and for the proverbial loyalty associated with his name in the cultural heritage of the Arabs. The lāmiyya’s canonical status owes much to its inclusion in Abū Tammām’s well-known anthology of poetry, the Ḥamāsa. It is a poem of tribal praise, reflecting key values of pre-Islamic Arabs. The lecture will focus on this poem, its medieval commentaries, modern critics’ readings of the poem, and the iconic status achieved by the poet.

Dr. Erez Naaman is an associate professor of Arabic at American University. He studied Arabic literature and Middle Eastern history at Tel Aviv University and earned his PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University in 2009. His scholarly work focuses on classical Arabic literature and culture. He published articles on such topics as literary borrowing in classical Arabic poetry; euphemisms, taboos, and language censorship in the medieval Islamic world; and collaborative composition of classical Arabic poetry. His book Literature and the Islamic Court: Cultural Life under al-Ṣāḥib Ibn ʿAbbād was published by Routledge in 2016.
