SUMMARY:Poetry and Prose Lecture with Professor Kevin Blankinship - Dust's Embrace: Al-Ma'arri and the Art of Dying in Classical Arabic
DESCRIPTION:On 3 April\, SQCC hosted its first poetry presentation in the Poetry and Prose Series of 2019. Our honored guest of the evening was Dr. Kevin Blankinship\, Assistant Professor of Arabic at Brigham Young University\, where he teaches Arabic language and literature. A specialist in classical Arabic literature\, his current book project is about the blind poet Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (b. 973 – d.1057) and the literary history of zuhd (“detachment’).Dr. Blankinship’s presentation analyzed poetic forms in al-Maʿarrī’s Luzūmīyāt (“Necessities”)\, referring to the collection of poetry’s overly complex rhyme scheme. In the presented poem\, Luzūmiyyah #55 (meter: wāfir – mufāʿalatun mufāʿalatun faʿūlun)\, Dr. Blankinship showed that al-Maʿarrī reminds readers of the great inevitable: everything in this world passes away. After the presentation\, Dr. Blankinship mingled with the crowd over Omani coffee and dates. \nVideo of the lecture can be viewed here.

SUMMARY:Umm an-Nar Mortuary Landscape at Dahwa with Dr. Kimberly Willliams
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kimberly Williams presented SQCC’s first lecture of 2019 on 26 March\, which explored the mortuary practices of the early Bronze Age. Dr. Williams is an associate professor of anthropology at Temple University. The lecture delved in to Dr. Williams’ recent work at Dahwa\, where she led a collaborative excavation between Sultan Qaboos University and Temple University. Dahwa has revealed important information about the relationship between the prehistoric Oman Peninsula and the Indus Valley. Dahwa is the first Umm an-Nar settlement excavated on the Batinah coast. It is a large industrial settlement that was used intensively for copper smelting\, but also had a significant agricultural component. Dr. Williams’ lecture included captivating 3-D models of the Dahwa site\, which allowed the viewer to explore every foot of this early Bronze Age site and gave the audience a more tangible understanding of the site’s mortuary practices. \nAfter the lecture\, there was a Q&A session that touched upon the future of digital culture heritage management techniques in Oman\, how the site differed from other Bronze age sites\, and what mortuary practices can tell us about the changing norms and traditions of ancient peoples. \nA video of the lecture can be viewed here.

SUMMARY:Film Night at SQCC: Sooty Falcons of Oman
DESCRIPTION:SQCC hosted its inaugural film night on Wednesday 20 March. The film for the evening was the documentary “The Migrant – Sooty Falcons in Oman.” This fascinating documentary features efforts of the Office for Conservation of the Environment (OCE) at the Diwan of Royal Court Oman\, which initiated a research program in cooperation with international experts to study and protect this unique long-range bird of prey. Experts at OCE tracked the falcons during the breeding seasons in their habitat on the Daymaniyat Archipelago islands around 20 kilometers off the coast of Oman. The documentary then followed the migration route of juvenile falcons\, crossing Al Hajar mountains and the Rub Al Khali desert in Oman\, resting in the Horn of Africa\, before finally reaching Madagascar\, the Sooty falcon’s non-breeding season destination.
