SUMMARY:Oman Night at Maydan
DESCRIPTION:On 10 September\, friends of SQCC and foodies alike gathered at Maydān restaurant for Oman Night. This special event featured an Oman-inspired menu with a flavors inspired by Oman’s maritime heritage. Designed by Chef Chris Morgan and co-owner Rose Privete\, each dish was prepared as an homage to the meals they had shared with local Omanis during a trip to the Sultanate in 2018. Traveling throughout the Sultanate\, they were welcomed into Omani family homes and kitchens where authentic recipes that had been passed down through generations in Oman were shared. Many of these recipes\, combinations of spices\, and culinary techniques were meticulously followed to make Oman night a remarkable evening.

DESCRIPTION:On 20 September\, GW-CIBER and SQCC co-hosted the Professional Development Business Arabic Immersion Workshop for Arabic language instructors. The workshop was led by Dr. Mohssen Esseesy\, GW Professor of Arabic and International Affairs. Discussion sessions were held on teaching business Arabic and developing short-term study abroad programs for the purpose of teaching business Arabic. Following a quick lunch break and a short tour of SQCC’s permanent exhibition\, an additional session on developing curricula for Arabic courses based on real-world contexts was led by Dr. Abeer Al-Mohsen\, the Arabic Language Program Specialist at SQCC.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture with Dr. Jeremy Prestholdt
DESCRIPTION:On 24 September\, Dr. Jeremy Prestholdt\, University of California\, San Diego\, delivered a lecture at SQCC on the extraordinary voyage of the Sultana. The Sultana\, the flagship of Sultan Sayyid Said bin Sultan\, traveled from Zanzibar to New York City in 1840 as a trading and diplomatic mission\, carrying with it the first Arab envoy to the United States\, Ahmad bin Na’aman  Al Kaabi. This important vessel arrived to great fanfare in New York City and made headlines across the United States. Among its cargo were multiple gifts for President Martin Van Buren\, including carpets\, Arabian horses\, and pearl jewelry. Many of these gifts were eventually accepted by the State Department. These gifts\, in turn\, became part of the Smithsonian collection. The voyage of the Sultana was critical to the continued development of U.S.-Oman trade relations\, as well as further solidifying diplomatic ties first established in the 1833 Treaty of Amity and Commerce. DESCRIPTION:On 26 September\, SQCC and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce jointly hosted a networking reception featuring special keynote speaker\, His Excellency Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy\, Minister of Commerce & Industry\, Sultanate of Oman. The event began with a brief networking reception followed by short introductory remarks by SQCC’s Senior Program Officer Dr. Harrison Guthorn\, by Senior Vice President\, Middle East and Turkey Affairs\, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Mr. Khush Choksy\, and by Her Excellency Ambassador Hunaina Al Mughairy. The event concluded with a talk given by His Excellency Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidy\, which focused on the role of industrial development in shaping the modern economy of Oman. His address also highlighted current economic development plans underway in the Sultanate and future prospects for increased economic ties between the U.S. and the Sultanate of Oman via trade.

With its natural splendor\, Oman has great potential to capitalize on local\, regional\, and international ecotourism markets by directing tourists to sites such as Al-Saleel Nature Park. Dr. Perry’s presentation addressed ways to promote park ecotourism as relevant to multiple audiences — government\, private industry\, local residents\, and tourists alike. Key research findings emphasize the importance of increasing awareness about ecotourism and the need for increased institutional capacity to support ecotourism in Al-Saleel Nature Park. DESCRIPTION:SQCC Hosted Students From Lorien Woods School \n\nOn Friday 11 October\, the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted students from Lorien Woods Elementary School in Virginia. Students split into two groups for a tour of SQCC’s exhibition space and a majmar painting activity. During the tour\, students explored the cultural exhibition and its interactive displays of Oman’s cultural heritage. Students learned about Omani history and the Sultanate’s millenia-long trading practices across the Indian Ocean. The tour ended with discussions of Omani handicrafts and attire. \n\nIn the majmar painting workshop students learned about Omani frankincense while painting a traditional Omani majmar\, or frankincense burner. SQCC provided paint\, brushes\, patterns\, and majmar replicas for students to paint traditional designs or entirely new patterns.

This year’s conference\, “Energy and Environmental Stewardship: Oman and the U.S.” included discussions of oil in Oman and the U.S.\, environmental and climate change effects on coastal regions\, disaster management\, and science diplomacy. HE Salim Al Aufi\, Undersecretary\, Ministry of Oil and Gas\, Sultanate of Oman\, delivered the conference keynote address the previous evening. \nThe conference’s first panel\, “Oil in Oman and the U.S.: Overlapping Histories and Concerns” focused on the evolution of the energy sector in both Oman and the U.S. and how efforts towards sustainability have affected future development. \nThe second panel\, “Environmental and Climate Change in Coastal Regions and Cities” discussed changing climate conditions and how the risk of flooding is being addressed in Oman and in Texas. \nThe lunch keynote “Science Diplomacy: My Journey and My Perspectives” was delivered by Dr. Kamlesh Lulla\, Director for University Research Collaboration and Partnership Office at Johnson Space Center\, NASA. During the lunch break\, conference guests also explored a poster presentation on Oman prepared by UHCL students. \nThe third panel\, “Disaster Management: Preparedness\, Response and Humanitarian Aid” highlighted the role of proactive disaster management and the multifaceted approaches needed to address disaster events in both Oman and Texas. \nThe fourth and final panel of the conference\, “Science Diplomacy” explored the role of science in fostering international cooperation.

Aided by the monsoon winds\, Omani dhows ferried precious cargo and goods across the 3\,000 miles of the Indian Ocean\, annually. The dependable frequency of this trade built lasting bridges of cultural and economic exchange that still exist today. ‘Sons of Sinbad’ plunges into the depths of this history and brings the stories and legends of the Sultanate’s past to life. DESCRIPTION:From 15-17 November\, SQCC exhibited at the Book Bazaar of the Middle Eastern Studies Association (MESA) Annual Meeting in New Orleans\, Louisiana. The MESA annual meeting is the largest gathering of academics and researchers focused on the Middle East in the U.S. At MESA\, SQCC promoted its new primary source database\, An Ocean of Paper\, which seeks to stimulate new research in the social history of the Sultanate by collecting\, cataloging\, and publishing the thousands of deeds (called waraqas) produced by Omanis in South Arabia and East Africa during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Staffers also spoke to conference attendees about the cultural and educational programs that SQCC offers\, including SALAM\, Sabla\, Evening Arabic Classes for Professionals\, the Research Fellowship and the SQCC library.

DESCRIPTION:SQCC hosted students from LaSalle-Backus Education Campus as part of EAP Program \n  \nThe Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a fifth grade class from LaSalle-Backus Education Campus as part of the Embassy Adoption Program (EAP) on Tuesday 19 November. EAP is a special collaboration between Washington Performing Arts and D.C. Public Schools. Students toured SQCC’s permanent exhibition featuring examples of traditional Omani dress\, a model of Oman’s irrigation system (known in Arabic as falaj)\, and a variety of cultural items including traditional silverwork and model dhows. Students received miniature World Traveler/Welcome to Oman passports stamped with the Omani emblem and SQCC logo. Students also received name tags with their names\, grade level\, and school in Arabic. \n\nAfter their tour\, the group listened to a presentation on Oman’s culture\, history\, and people. During the presentation\, students learned about the collection and utility of frankincense as they passed around traditional Omani frankincense burners called majmars. Most students touched and smelled frankincense for the first time. Students also asked questions about daily life\, food\, traditions\, and culture in Oman.

SUMMARY:SQCC Launches Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center Library hosted its inaugural session of the SQCC Book Club on 4 December\, 2019. The club’s mission is to promote reading and discussion of literature from or about the Sultanate of Oman. The first meeting included a group discussion of selected stories from My Grandmother’s Stories: Folk Tales from Dhofar by Khadija bint Alawi Al-Dhahab and translated into English by W. Scott Chahanovich. \n  \nThe book features a collection of fifteen folktales passed down orally from generation to generation in Oman. The author\, who grew up in Oman’s southern province of Dhofar\, transcribed and compiled these stories about princesses\, peasants\, genies\, and talking animals. These traditional folk tales give readers of all ages a unique glimpse into Omani life and customs. \n  \nBook club members read aloud excerpts from three folks tales – The Sly Fox\, The Magic Ring\, and The Prince and the Clever Maiden. Many SQCC Book Club members drew parallels from the morals found in these Dhofari stories to lessons from folktales found in both Eastern and Western traditions. Omani coffee and dates accompanied the discussion. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 4 December\, SQCC welcomed adult continuing learning students from Frederick Community College. The students\, joined by their professor and current SQCC fellow\, Mrs. Linda Pappas Funsch\, enjoyed a tour of the SQCC permanent exhibition which explored Oman’s fascinating history. After the tour students listened to a cultural lecture about Omani culture and social norms in preparation for the trip to Oman in early 2020. The students concluded their visit to SQCC with a visit to SQCC’s current photography exhibition\, “Oman –– A Vision of Modernity.”

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 5 December\, SQCC represented Oman at the 8th annual Winternational Celebration at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. SQCC represented the Omani Embassy by showcasing a variety of cultural traditions from the Sultanate to entertain and teach throngs of curious visitors about Oman’s rich history. SQCC’s booth featured majmars\, dates\, frankincense\, kumas\, textiles\, and a variety of publications about Oman’s history and Omani society. The Oman booth was a unique festival feature in a bustling global marketplace with more than 50 embassies promoting their countries through vibrant and displays of visual art and cultural treasures.

SUMMARY:2019 World Arabic Language Day at SQCC
DESCRIPTION:Guests gathered at SQCC on Tuesday\, 10 December for an early celebration of World Arabic Language Day. This year’s theme was “The Arabic Language Through Music” which featured a public lecture with live demonstrations\, musical performances\, and a reception.  Dr. Rasmussen\, Professor of Music and Ethnomusicology at William & Mary\, led a discussion about the traditional music and instruments throughout the Arab world and the Arabic language used to describe music.  Accompanying Dr. Rasmussen’s presentation of her field research across three continents were two other musicians\, Mr. Laith Alattar (‘ud) and Ms. Sanam Analoui (percussion). Together\, the trio ensemble shared stories and provided lively demonstrations of Arabic music and presentations of their respective instruments. Afterwards\, a reception was held upstairs featuring Middle Eastern fare\, more musical performances\, singing. 2019 World Arabic Language Day at SQCC was an informative and fun event to conclude the year.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 17 December\, SQCC visited 5th graders of LaSalle-Backus Education Campus School for the Embassy Adoption Program\, a unique education and partnership program of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and Washington Performing Arts. Students narrated what they learned in their first visit to SQCC on Oman’s culture\, people\, geographic location\, and food. Students were also introduced to the 11 provinces of Oman through writing the names of provinces on a blank map of Oman. Later on\, students learned how to write their names and their parents’ names in Arabic as well.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 19 December\, the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) visited the fifth graders of LaSalle-Backus Education Campus for the third session of the Embassy Adoption Program (EAP). EAP is a partnership program between DC Public Schools and Washington Performing Arts. This time\, students learned Omani traditional dance and performed it many time with their classmates for future performance at SQCC. Later on\, students learned to sing the Omani National Anthem in Arabic. By the end\, students wrote their names again in Arabic to refresh what they have learned in the previous session.

They learned about frankincense and the historical importance of the tree to Omani culture. The presentation focused on the historical and contemporary importance its dried resin\, planting of the tree today\, and the majmar. After seeing Omani examples of this clay charcoal brassier and being shown an instructional video\, students painted models of their own in SQCC’s craft room and took them home. We look forward to welcoming back LaSalle to SQCC in the coming weeks.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 12 February\, SQCC received students from the Arabic Department at American University in Washington\, D.C. Students toured SQCC’s permanent exhibition learning about traditional Omani attire and handicrafts such as pottery\, basketry\, and silverwork. On the tour\, students also learned about the historical importance of the aflaj irrigation system\, forts\, and maritime trade. After the tour\, the group listened to a lecture about Omani culture\, people\, traditions\, and the country’s environment. Finally\, students asked many questions regarding Omani customs\, ecotourism\, and SQCC’s mission and programming in the U.S. and abroad. Students were also encouraged to speak in Arabic and to introduce themselves and the reason why they study Arabic at their university. Students then practiced asking questions about Oman in Arabic.
