SUMMARY:An Ocean of Paper Teacher Workshop at SQCC
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 22 June\, teachers from across the DMV participated in a teacher workshop titled “Sailing an Ocean of Paper: Teaching Indian Ocean Economic and Social History.” Dr. Susan Douglass\, Center for Contemporary Arab Studies\, Georgetown University\, started the workshop with her presentation “Trading\, Merchants\, Goods\, and Means of Travel over Time in the Indian Ocean.” In this interactive presentation\, participants learned how to incorporate primary and secondary source material found on the Indian Ocean in World History website (www.indianoceanhistory.org) in to their classrooms. After a quick coffee break\, Dr. Fahad Bishara\, University of Virginia\, gave a fascinating lecture on the origins of the An Ocean of Paper project via skype. In his presentation\, Dr. Bishara discussed the interconnected nature of the Indian Ocean economic system and the debt transaction records (waraqat) that recorded these relationships. The workshop concluded with a presentation by Dr. Harrison Guthorn\, SQCC\, titled “An Ocean of Paper in the Classroom.” In his presentation\, Dr. Guthorn walked the teachers through the new An Ocean of Paper database and discussed how best to incorporate these 19th century debt transaction records in to social studies classes. Participants worked through an example lesson plan and answered questions on the details of a curated collection of translated records.

Combined\, these resources provide educators with a unique tool for enriching curricula by integrating rich economic and social history from the Indian Ocean into the classroom. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session.

SUMMARY:Poetry and Prose Lecture with Professor Kevin Blankinship - Dust's Embrace: Al-Ma'arri and the Art of Dying in Classical Arabic
DESCRIPTION:On 3 April\, SQCC hosted its first poetry presentation in the Poetry and Prose Series of 2019. Our honored guest of the evening was Dr. Kevin Blankinship\, Assistant Professor of Arabic at Brigham Young University\, where he teaches Arabic language and literature. A specialist in classical Arabic literature\, his current book project is about the blind poet Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (b. 973 – d.1057) and the literary history of zuhd (“detachment’).Dr. Blankinship’s presentation analyzed poetic forms in al-Maʿarrī’s Luzūmīyāt (“Necessities”)\, referring to the collection of poetry’s overly complex rhyme scheme. In the presented poem\, Luzūmiyyah #55 (meter: wāfir – mufāʿalatun mufāʿalatun faʿūlun)\, Dr. Blankinship showed that al-Maʿarrī reminds readers of the great inevitable: everything in this world passes away. After the presentation\, Dr. Blankinship mingled with the crowd over Omani coffee and dates. \nVideo of the lecture can be viewed here.
