SQCC hosts Public Lecture by Dr. Fahad Bishara

Thursday, October 12, 2017

On Wednesday 12 October, the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a public lecture titled "An Ocean of Paper: Writing the Social History of Oman's Indian Ocean World."

Dr. Fahad Bishara, Assistant Professor of History at University of Virginia, discussed a different approach to telling the story of the Omani Empire in the 19th century. Instead of focusing on the reigns of sultans and the role of diplomatic accords, Dr. Bishara highlighted the role of Omani, Indian, and Swahili merchants, planters, moneylenders, jurists, scribes, and other lesser-known actors through promissory notes, debt deeds, and other contracts. These financial documents depict an intertwined world of money, property, law, and mobility that created durable bonds between Oman and East Africa. After his lecture, Dr. Bishara answered questions from the audience.

Pictures from the lecture can be viewed here.
