SQCC Hosts Lecture by Dr. Marc Lochbaum

Thursday, October 18, 2018

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a lecture by Dr. Marc Lochbaum titled "Activity Levels and Screen Time Behaviors in Omani Children" on 18 October. Dr. Lochbaum is a Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management at Texas Tech University. Dr. Lochbaum's research, conducted as the 2017 SQCC Research Fellow, was a study that examined objectively measured physical activity patterns, self-reported sedentary activities, and physical self-perceptions of roughly 1000 4th-grade children across Oman. This lecture summarized the study's findings, which found that objectively-measured activity levels of Omani children are similar to those from western countries, but with much less screen-time behaviors. However, compared to a few Middle East countries, Omani boys are more active than boys in the UAE and Qatar. Gender-disparities with regards to Omani children’s daily physical activity, including sport team participation, should receive further attention. Following his presentation, Dr. Lochbaum answered questions from the audience.
