SQCC Hosts Lecture By Dr. Chuck Bailey

Thursday, October 4, 2018

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted Dr. Christopher "Chuck" Bailey on 4 October. Dr. Bailey, a professor of Geology at the College of William & Mary, presented the lecture "Insights from the Deep Earth: Oman's Amazing Geological Heritage." The lecture focused on the spectacular geology and rich geological history found in Oman. In particular, in northern Oman, a vast slab of oceanic crust and mantle, known as ophiolite, was emplaced at the Earth’s surface approximately 80 million years ago. Globally, ophiolites are rare and their origin enigmatic. Dr. Bailey highlighted the unique characteristics of Oman's ophiolite, which is the world’s largest and best-exposed ophiolite. This ophiolite provides a unique setting to study the dynamic processes that place rocks from the sea floor and the deep earth literally at our feet. Dr. Bailey's lecture included examples of the rare rock formations found throughout Oman, which the audience was able to interact with. Following his presentation, Dr. Bailey answered questions from the audience.
