SQCC Hosts Lecture by Dr. Christopher Small

Tuesday, September 18, 2018

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a public lecture by Dr. Christopher Small entitled “Decades of Change in the Dhofar Mountains: Perspectives from Space and the Field” on 18 September. Dr. Small is a geophysicist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and a 2016 SQCC research fellow. The lecture focused on Dr. Small's two-year study on vegetation patterns in the Dhofar Mountains connected to the seasonal monsoon (khareef). Satellite imagery data was supplemented by ground-based observations recorded over two field seasons in 2016 and 2017. Dr. Small's study concluded that there were no statistically significant differences in vegetation levels in the Dhofar Mountains given the swings of seasonal variability in the region. Following his presentation, Dr. Small answered questions from the audience.
