SQCC hosted its second event of the 2018 Poetry and Prose Series on 12 July. Our honored guest for the afternoon was Dr. Suzanne Stetkevych, the Sultan Qaboos Bin Said Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University. Dr. Stetkevych is an Arabic poetry devotee who scholarship focuses on classical and modern Arabic poetry. She presented a poem by the Arab warrior and Prince Abu Firas al-Hamdani. The title of the poem is "Arāka ʿaṣiyya al-damʿi (I See That You Refuse to Weep)," which is counted as one of his most renowned Rumiyyat poems. The Rumiyyat, poems about the Byzantines, were composed by Abu Firas al-Hamdani during his captivity in Constantinople under the Byzantines from 962-966 CE.

The event was attended by 60 poetry enthusiasts. The attendees were treated to Omani coffee and dates while listening to Abu Firas al-Hamdani’s masterpiece poem.
