SQCC Hosts Lecture by Dr. Thomas McDow

Thursday, May 10, 2018

On Thursday 10 May 2018 the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a public lecture by Dr. Thomas McDow  entitled "Buying Time: Debt and Mobility from Oman to East Africa (and Back)." Dr. McDow an associate professor of history at The Ohio State University and 2015 SQCC Research Fellow shared historical research from his new publication Buying Time: Debt and Mobility in the Western Indian Ocean (Ohio University Press, 2018). The lecture focused on the web of debt that connected coastal Oman, the interior, East Africa and India. Focusing on the changing dynamics of the middle 19th century, Dr. McDow argued that these webs of debt were used to foster patron-client relationships and aid mobility across the Indian Ocean.

Following his presentation, Dr. McDow answered questions from the audience.
