SQCC sponsored the William and Mary Middle Eastern Music Ensemble (MEME) to travel to Oman on a study and performance tour in early January 2014. MEME is based at William and Mary, and is under the directorship of Dr. Anne Rasmussen, a former SQCC Research Fellow to Oman. The group consisted of Dr. Rasmussen, Dr. Jonathan Glasser, and seven students.
The ensemble performed pieces of traditional Arab music, including compositions by contemporary Arab composers living in the United States. The group performed at a number of venues while in Oman, including at US Ambassador Greta Holtz’s residence, Sultan Qaboos University, and Jama’iyat Howat al-‘Ud (Oud Hobbyists’ Association).
While in Oman, they were also able to visit Bait Zubair Museum, Old Muscat and the Muttrah Souk, the Royal Opera House, and the town of Nizwa.
