SQCC Participates in the Embassy Adoption Program EAP, Third Visit, 2017
Monday, February 13, 2017
The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a class of fifth graders from Barnard Elementary School as part of the Embassy Adoption Program, a collaborative project between Washington Performing Arts and D.C. Public Schools. Students toured SQCC’s exhibition hall, which features Omani national dress, models of Omani irrigation systems “aflaj”, and artifacts of traditional life, both quotidian and ceremonial.
Students learned about the fragrant utility of frankincense, a frankincense burner, “majmar” was passed around. This was the first time for many in the class to smell the aromatic resin, which is burned as both a personal and domestic fragrance. Next, each student painted a majmar, delighted in designing, comparing, and crafting their own decorative frankincense burners. Finally, students explored the SQCC Library, flipping through illustrated books and encyclopedias in English and Arabic.
